Today I plan on reading some short stories - more like "vignettes" from a book entitled "Dateline America". The book was written by Charles Kuralt in 1979. My dad gave me this book during my last year in HS - 1979. That summer, we drove to Humboldt, IA. That was where my dad grew up and we were headed to Humboldt to visit his mother (my grandmother). The town was and still is and probably always will be surrounded by corn and soybean fields. When my dad graduated from HS in 1948, he got a job at a nearby slaughterhouse. Shortly, he headed down to college in Aimes, IA as he realized with just a HS diploma, he might end up back at the slaughterhouse. Well before I left HS, it was pretty apparent that we shared the commonality of being attracted to the back roads that laced across the hinterlands and tiny towns that popped up when you least expected them to pop up, the ancient barns, outbuildings, unoccupied weather beaten houses and shacks teetering precariously to the land. It seemed as if a stiff wind could splinter them into a pile of wood accompanied by branches that had been snapped off from towering deciduous trees. I soaked up what Charles had written in Dateline America. Not only did I share my passion for back roads and tiny towns with my dad, I also shared this commonality with Charles Kuralt. Let's head over to Boone, NC now and we'll be exposed to what Mr. Kuralt would like to share with us, the reader...
