This, That And the Other
Sagebrush
We'll head back in time and listen to a number of songs recorded by folks who made their way to CA's San Joaquin Valley to work on farms. Escaping from the Dust Bowl - mainly in the lower Great Plains, these songs were often first recorded in the Great Plains and accompained the destitute migrants as they headed west. These "field recordings" made by Charles Todd and Robert Sorkin were made in 1940/41. From there, we'll head down to the Southern U.S. and listen to some folk/fiddle/hillbilly/western/gospel/hillbilly songs recorded largely by Alan Lomax (not all songs were recorded by Mr. Lomax). These songs were recorded between 1934 and 1942. All of the recordings on this show are part of the massive Library of Congress audio recording collection.
