The Front Porch Blues Show

JD Esquire

Rich Blackmarr will host the Front Porch Blues Show this evening.  The focus of the program will be the extensive and varied career of jazz and blues/R&B guitarist Lloyd 'Tiny' Grimes from the early 1940s to the early 1960s.  Tiny Grimes was skilled on the electric 4-string tenor guitar and a songwriter/bandleader who made his first recordings with the jive vocal harmony quartet the Cats & the Fiddle.  Soon after he joined the Art Tatum Trio, backing the amazing jazz pianist along with bassist Slam Stewart.  He included Charlie Parker in a 1944 recording session, which was Bird's first small group bebop waxing.  Grimes was a frequent star of many later 1940s recording projects spanning jazz, blues, and R&B.  He linked with tenor saxists Ike Quebec, Coleman Hawkins, John Hardee and Red Prysock as he transitioned into the early 1950s leading his R&B group the Rockin' Highlanders, which incl. Screamin' Jay Hawkins.  He also cut a fine session backing Billie Holiday.
