Music critic and activist Ellen Willis was born this date in 1941. At The New Yorker (1968-75), she was the first popular music critic writing for a national audience as well as one of the first women in that male-dominated field. She also worked as a cultural and political essayist and a professor at NYU until her death in 2006.
