On this date in 1959 Columbia University English instructor Charles Van Doren admitted to a House committee investigating television quiz show rigging that, "I was involved, deeply involved, in a deception. The fact that I too was very much deceived cannot keep me from being the principal victim of that deception, because I was its principal symbol."
Only recently a Time Magazine cover subject for his appearances on Twenty One, Van Doren lost his faculty and NBC correspondent appointments, subsequently pled guilty to perjury before a grand jury, and withdrew from public life. His later recollection of those events in The New Yorker broke a silence of nearly 50 years.
