Conspiracy Comrades
Cameron and Katie
Conspiracies for hundreds of years have depended upon a fear of the “other,” an often undistinguished out-group that represents some kind of threat to the status quo of established in-groups. These out-groups, ill-defined and at odds with the in, become embedded in local culture and legend, their differences being passed down through years of disparities and occasional conflict. Some of these groups become defined by their out-group status, rationalizing the divide as proof of the correctness of their beliefs. Though not every such group can be called a cult, this is one of the essential features of the many cults that have speckled the American landscape. Today, we’ll be talking about the groups that believed so strongly in the wrongness of the in-group that they were willing to die for it. Welcome to the Heaven's Gate episode.
