Speaking in Tongues

Richard Estes

France Kassing is sitting in for the erudite and eloquent Richard Estes today.

Sasha Abramsky is an acclaimed freelance journalist and the author of several insightful and searing books, including American Furies: Crime, Punishment, and Vengeance in the Age of Mass Imprisonment and Breadline, USA: The Hidden Scandal of American Hunger and How to Fix It.  The book we are discussing today, The American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives, published by Nation Books in September 2013, is "an ambitious portrait of poverty in 21st century America."  Mr. Abramsky is also a popular lecturer right here at UC Davis.  Many of the interviews on which this book is based are accessible on the audio archive: www.thevoicesofpoverty.org.
