Today's show wanders a bit from the blues, but not far. All the musicians on today's show passed on far to early, and all of them had the blues wrapped in and around their music. Amongst others, I have Lowell George, the vocalist, slide guitarist, baritone saxophonist, harp player (and occasional Howlin' Wolf impersonator) of the great Little Feat. Lowell was felled by a heart attack touring in support of his first solo album. Also on board, I have Paul Kossoff (pictured), the tortured genius guitarist best known for his work with Free. Koss was dogged by depression and drug problems, but he was one of the most emotive and painfully passionate musicians of his generation. Also on board, Mike Bloomfield, another tortured genius with drug problems. He was one of the first true virtuosos of rock and blues guitar, and was unbeatable in his prime. ALso, to launch the show, Jaco Pastorius, a hugely talented and creative bassist, also dogged by depression and drug problems. He played the electric bass like nobody before or since. Today, pain and pleasure in equal measure. That, and a helluva lot of amazing music.
