American mountaineer Willi Unsoeld was born this date in 1926. Best known for his 1963 ascent of the West Ridge of Mt Everest, he was foundation faculty of The Evergreen State College, Peace Corps Director in Nepal, and a leader in the outdoor education movement. He died in an avalanche on Mt Rainier in 1979.
