The Saturday Morning Folk Show
Bill Wagman & Robyne Fawx
Ed subs for Bill Wagman this week.
In a Lincoln Day speech in Wheeling, West Virginia on this date in 1950, freshman US Senator Joseph McCarthy hopped on the red scare bandwagon with accusations of Communist infiltration of the US State Department. He rode high as a national figure until his censure at the end of 1954, giving his name to the Second Red Scare, which blighted American public life through the 1950s and beyond. He continued to serve in the Senate until his death from liver disease in 1957.
