On July 7, 1456 in a posthumous retrial for heresy after the end of the Hundred Years War, Joan of Arc was acquitted. The French folk hero was canonized after World War I.

Falconetti's portrayal of the Maid of Orleans at her original trial in The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) is regarded as one of the finest performances in all of silent film.
