The Front Porch Blues Show

JD Esquire

The first part of the program focuses on acoustic, delta, and early Chicago blues. Tune in to hear the great legends and lesser known artists who formed the roots of indigenous American music. We also feature contemporary acoustic blues artists. The second part of the program is a medley of contemporary blues with a special emphasis on Chicago blues. You'll also hear R&B, big band blues, jazz-blues, zydeco, soul, gospel, and blues that's not easy to classify.

Show Description for Sunday 09/07/2008

The San Francisco Blues Festival - September 26-28, 2008

Tune in at 8 p.m. on Sunday September 7th for our annual conversation with Tom Mazzolini, the producer of the San Francisco Blues Festival (and blues DJ at KPFA in Berkeley). This is the 36th anniversary of the festival and Tom has a lot of surprises, as always, plus legendary performers like Chicago’s David Honeyboy Edwards, the last of the great Delta blues musicians (and the last to have known Robert Johnson). This great festival will showcase Johnny Winters, Buckwheat Zydeco (the Louisiana Zydeco accordion king), Denise LaSalle (the Queen of southern soul–blues), Curtis Salgado, Hot Tuna, the Delta Groove Records Review, Barbara Lynn (from the Texas Gulf coast), Michael Burks, Ruthie Foster, Elmore James Jr. with Cadillac Zack (down home Southside Chicago slide - don’t miss this!) and more. And at noon Friday the 26th, Tom has a tribute to John Lee Hooker. Plus blues movies at the Roxie Theater on 16th at Valencia. Don’t miss this festival.

If you've tuned in to our past conversations with Tom, you know you won't hear those great blues stories anywhere else. For details on the festival, check out Tom's website at sfblues.com.
