Sir Michael Tippett was born January 2, 1905. As a gay man and a conscientious objector, he was considered by some an outsider in the clubby world of British art music. His work has received much wider exposure since his centenary in 2005.

We'll be pre-empted by UC Davis women's basketball.  The Aggies travel to New Haven, Connecticut to play the Yale Bulldogs. 

It's the birthday of the late Phil Ochs (1940-1976), a great topical singer cut down in what should have been his prime.  We'll feature his music when we sub for Robyne on the Saturday Morning Folk Show on Saturday, December 26.  

The American Bach Soloists present Handel's Messiah this evening at 7:30 pm at the Mondavi Center on campus.

Dust off that menorah for the festival of lights.

We'll be pre-empted this week by UC Davis women's basketball.  Tune in as the Aggies host the Denver Pioneers.  The pre-game show starts at 2:45 pm. 

On December 5, 1848, President James K Polk kicked off the Gold Rush when he confirmed a new discovery of gold in Alta California, Mexico in a message before Congress. Cession and admission soon followed.

We're pre-empted one last time for UC Davis football.  The Aggies take to the road for the annual Causeway Classic at Sacramento State.

On November 21, 1877, Thomas Edison announced the invention of the phonograph, a device for recording and replaying sound.  In May 1889, the first phonograph parlor for public listening to recorded sound opened in San Francisco. 

The West Coast Ragtime Society's 23d annual festival runs this weekend in Sacramento.

After the game, you might enjoy seeing mezzo-soprano Susan Graham and The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in concert at the Mondavi Center.  They'll present an all-Purcell program featuring Dido and Aeneas.

In recent years, Halloween has become a major holiday, with an economic impact of $4 to $6 billion.  It is now reckoned second only to Christmas in retail potential.

Italian composer Luciano Berio was born October 24, 1925.  In addition to his own ground-­breaking work, he trained and influenced many other composers as a faculty member at Mills College.

The NorCal NoiseFest kicks off Thursday, October 15 with a preview concert at John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis and a KDVS spotlight on local artists. The festival runs October 16-18 in Sacramento.

The great blues singer Bessie Smith died on this date in 1937 as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile collision near Clarksdale, Mississippi.  She was 43. 

Her 1925 recording of WC Handy's St Louis Blues, featuring Louis Armstrong on cornet, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1993.
