Analog Oatmeal Abroad in Japan, Part 2 Folk and traditional music from all over Japan, focusing on the koto (zither), shamisen/sanshin (fiddle) and shakuhachi (flute). To round it off, contemporary Japanese music that takes influence from all of the above: discoish, electroish, rockish. (I'll fill in my daruma's other eye when I go to Japan to learn more about all this.)

Analog Oatmeal Abroad in Japan (Part 1 of 2) Old and new taiko drum ensemble music. There's this Japanese legend that long ago, the Sun Goddess got insulted by her brother, so she holed up in a cave, leaving the world in darkness. The other gods begged her to come out so all the plants and animals wouldn't die, but she was too stubborn. Finally, one god overturned a barrel outside the cave and started banging on it, making all kinds of noise, singing and dancing. The other gods were so amused by her show that they laughed and cheered. The Sun Goddess heard the commotion and, overcome with curiosity, finally came out of her cave. The world came to life, and so did taiko music.

Analog Oatmeal Abroad in Korea I've been gone the last couple weeks because I went to UCLA to take a class on traditional Korean folk music, and now I'm going to share it with you. We'll hear three basic types of gugak (cultivated folk): samulnori (drum ensemble), p'ansori (song stories) and minyo (for the kayageum zither). Plus we'll throw in some more contemporary Korean songs at the end for kicks.
