Abroad in Southeast Asia, Part 4

We'll conclude this equatorial exploration with some '60s/'70s beat and pop music from Thailand, Burma, Indonesia and Cambodia.

In the '60s and '70s, these countries took influence from Western style rock'n'roll and made it their own. So you'll hear a lot of familiar 1-4-5 chord progressions, but matched up with some traditional rhythms and instrumentations.

Luckily, a few record labels have uncovered these gems, most of which were recorded only to cassette tape in limited releases (and even more luckily, we have them in the KDVS library!); we're gonna hear a bunch from Sublime Frequencies, Khmer Rock and Chlangden.

Analog Oatmeeal Abroad in Southeast Asia, Part 3

Today we're going to continue exploring traditional court and folk music of Southeast Asia, and dipping into Oceania too. We'll hear a lot of flute and xylophone music from Vietnam and then dance and a cappella choir music from the Solomon Islands and French Polynesia.

Tune in for music from the mountains and the islands!

Analog Oatmeal Abroad in Southeast Asia, Part 2.

We'll be listening to folk and traditional music from Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. The last two weeks consisted of almost all percussive sounds, so this week will be wind instruments, vocal a cappella and (I lied) bamboo xylophones.

Tune in for some jolts and some lullabies!

Doing the gamelan show last week made me want to further explore the Southeast Asian section of our library, so...

Analog Oatmeal Abroad continues with traditional and folk music from Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Burma and Tibet. (Part 1 of 2 or 3 or 4, who knows!)

Tune in for songs that take influence from religious ceremonies, the elements of nature, communal work, and insects.

Third Annual Post-Fundraiser Minimal-Talking Gamelan Show

Gamelan is the traditional court music of Indonesia, performed on a variety of bronze gongs and metallophones, hand drums, bamboo flutes, and some string instruments. Styles vary greatly from island to island and region to region. Today will be focused on West Java (Sunda) and Bali.

If you missed out on the fun  you can still go to the fundraiser site and pledge online. Thank you to everyone who donated! You're helping keep this kind of awesome international stuff on the air.

I've been hosting "Analog Oatmeal" for three years now, and the show has changed drastically during that time. While I still like to highlight some indie pop and folk tunes, fellow DJs and the expansive music library at KDVS have turned me on to old funk and soul, electronic and hip-hop, and international music.

This year for fundraiser, I'm offering a compilation of gamelan music, the traditional court music of Indonesia that is performed on bronze gongs and metallophones. It's called "Percussion of the Cosmos" and it features college and community ensembles from all over California. It's some of the most ethereal and beautiful music I've ever heard!

KDVS has been the best part of my Davis experience, and I hope you can take part in it too.

Enjoy!
