In the first hour of this week's show, I'm highlighting the most overlooked of blues musicians - the drummers! I have cuts from the legendary Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (pictured), Buddy Miles, Jimi Bott, and Sammy Lay. After the Whambam Special, I have excellent blues/jazz/soul guitar from Alex Schultz (also featured on Jimi Botts' record) and BIG soul vocals from Tad Robinson (also featuring Alex Schultz). That's a lotta Alex Shultz. He's worth the airtime. Listen!

We got us a TON of great new music this week, and there's a little something for everyone! The swing enthusiasts will dig a new one from swing bandleader, singer and harp player Flattop Tom (pictured), harmonica junkies will dig Carlos del Junco, guitar geeks get their fix with a new live one from Albert Cummings and a new studio album from Elvin Bishop - those who dig the slash'n'burn of a slide guitar finally, FINALLY get a new one from Li'l Ed and the Blues Imperials. Hope you still got them dancin' shoes - you gonna need 'em.

This last week was a momentous anniversary, a rememberance of an event that changed the world forever. That's right - September 11th, MY BIRTHDAY. This week, I'm throwing myself a good old-fashioned house party (and yes, by the way, that's me in the picture on stage with Spotted Dog - talk about a face made for radio...) I'm playing music that makes me happy for various reasons - stuff that makes me laugh, makes me sing along, makes me rise up and boogie my ass around the studio. House Party Tonight!!!

After a set of music about tacos last week (yeah, I know) I got to thinking about Junior Watson. Junior's a brilliant guitarist, and one of the most inventive and consistently brilliant practitioners of west coast blues guitar. Consequently, he has played with EVERYBODY. Today is all about Junior's brilliant guitar playing, from his early days with Canned Heat through stints with James Harman, Charlie Musselwhite, Kim Wilson, Terry Hanck, and his latest guest slot with the JW-Jones blues band. Guitar geeks and fans of jump blues do NOT want to miss this show.

A few weeks back, I went fishing out of Bodega Bay with the other guitarist in the Spotted Dog Blues Revue, and we caught a whole mess of rockfish. Sadly, we had to put off cooking them for a while, and they've been languishing in Greg's freezer. Well, last night we had ourselves a regular Saturday Night Fish Fry, leading to some downright epic Tacos de Pescado. You wouldn't think I'd be able to parlay that into a set of blues songs - and you'd be dead wrong. Listen during hour two for Junior Watson, Phil Berkowitz, Dick Dale, Johnny Dyer and Rick Holmstrom on tunes about that most excelent of foods - the Fish Taco. Loads of other great new music too, including the new Jackie Payne Steve Edmonson Band record that was missing from last week's show.

We've got a REALLY good new album from James "Super Chikan" Johnson. He's a talented story teller and songwriter, and one of the most prolific and talented instrument customizers in the blues today. He's made guitars from gas cans and hubcaps, and has carved up Strats to include multiple extra diddley bow necks. All of these custom axes feature his folk-art style painting. Just too cool.Exciting new music from slide wizard Sonny Landreth (with a helluva guest list - Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Jimmy Buffet, Eric Johnson and others). Listen also for tracks from "Bocce Boogie," a live recording from 1978 featuring an all-star cast including Big Walter Horton, Ronnie Earl, Sugar Ray Norcia, Ted Harvey, and Mudcat Ward. To kick things off in the first hour, there's some brillaint Chicago blues from Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.

Along with the usual allotment of great new music come two new CDs that I am way excited about. First, new music from Watermelon Slim and the Workers. Slim's a truck driver who holds degrees in history and journalism, is a member of MENSA, used to room with Henry "Sunflower" Vestine of Canned Heat, farmed watermelons, survived a heart attack, and way more. That's an interesting enough back story, but the guy is also an INCREDIBLE musician. Listen close for what I'm talking about. The other one is a live release of Hollywood Fats with the Paladins. Fats was one of the greatest blues guitarists of the 1970s, and after time with Albert King, James Harman, The Blasters, and others, Fats died young. The new live album features Fats and the Paladins, one of the greatest blues and rockabilly outfits to take the stage. Listen in!
