Malefactor
Inaugurating a new age with the summation of that which has followed in the previous year, The Malefactor places his mark upon those fortunate to listen to the grim Word. A monument of tartarean proportions is erected here in the City of the Accursed, completing the Autumn season's reflections with a review of MMXIII.
Behold the Malefactor's unholy presence here.

Artist | Song | Album | Label | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
Deus Mortem | Receving The Impurity of Jeh | Emanations of the Black Light | Strych Promotions | Opening the show with an initial Top 6(66) of 2013, a choice find from Poland's monster black metal duo. |
Atlantean Kodex | Sol Invictus | The White Goddess | 20 Buck Spin | Masterful sophomore LP from Germany's epic doom/power/progressive metal warriors, who have fashioned a formidable "Grammar of Poetic Myth," walking in Frazier's footsteps as surely as their debut, The Golden Bough, might have indicated. |
Power Trip | Manifest Decimation | Manifest Decimation | Southern Lord | Mighty thrash throwback release that revives the spirit of bands like Nuclear Assault and foregoes the vapid pizza party metal of other "Neo-Thrash" bands. |
Nails | Abandon All Life | Abandon All Life | Southern Lord | Powerful crust/grind with a vicious streak and powerful hooks. |
Ulcerate | The Imperious Weak | Vermis | Relapse | A return from Ulcerate that better suited my tastes than The Destroyers of All and sees their return to my year's end list, this album restores some of the frantic intensity of Everything Is Fire while maintaining the band's progressively greater atm |
Satan | Tears of Blood | Life Sentence | Listenable | Another late addition to my Best Of, a mighty statement of the true metal ethos from Britain's venerable Satan. |

Ereb Altor | Fire Meets Ice | Fire Meets Ice | Cyclone Empire | A strong bounce-back from Ereb Altor which sees them return more to the sounds of their excellent album The End, focusing on soaring, melodic vocals and the most tasteful of cheesy atmospheres. |
Scatorgy | Suppuration | Scatorgy | New Standard Elite | Crushing release of ultra brutal death metal in the vein of Orchidectomy and Brodequin. Possibly the most brutal and extreme release of 2013. |
Inquisition | Arrival of Eons After | Obscure Verses For The Multiverse | Season Of Mist | Worthy successor to Inquisition's formidable Ominous Doctrines... which has deservedly seen the band break out into the larger metal scene. |
Lluvia | Espada de Bronce | Premonicion de Guerra | Fallen Empire | Another late 2013 release, this is a worthy request from Wothanaz and one of the strongest black metal releases of 2013. |
Odem | Nails As The Weapon of Hatred [Alternative Version] | The Valley of Cut Tongues | Daemon Worship Productions | The sole EP that I will permit to enter the exalted ranks of this list, Odem crafts one of the most viscerally intense and simultaneously engaging releases of the year by supreme musicianship and compositional excellence. |
Defeated Sanity | Martyrium | Passages Into Deformity | Willowtip | My early contender for album of the year has faced strong challenges from the other masters on this list, but none have definitively displaced it. It is one of a number of mighty releases in a wide-open field for 2013. |

Urgehal | Nyx | Atomkinder | Agonia | 2001. |

Cirith Gorgor | Unveiling The Essence | Unveiling The Essence | Osmose | 2001. |
Allfather | Of Man and Valour | Weapon of Ascension | Invictus | 2005 release of retrograde Might is Right Metal. |

Winter Of Apokalypse | Black Metal of Death | Solitary Winter Night | Moribund | 2004. |

Doomsword | Heathen Assault | Let Battle Commence | Dragonheart/SPV | Epic doom release from 2003. For elite history-loving metalheads only. |
Manowar | The Dawn of Battle | The Dawn of Battle | Nuclear Blast | As the battle dawns this new quarter at KDVS, what better armament to take to the front than this mighty 2003 single from the Kings of Metal? |
Saxon | Crusader [2001 Re-Recording] | Killing Ground [Bonus Disc] | Steamhammer | Speaking of mighty... |
Solstice | Death's Crown Is Victory | Death's Crown Is Victory | Self Released | One of the many 2013 EPs that I couldn't fit on my limited 2013 list, this majestic return for Solstice. |
