On this date in 1793 revolutionary politician Jean Paul Marat was assassinated in Paris by a supporter of the opposition Girondists, whose overthrow he had engineered. Jacques-Louis David's famous painting of the event was produced shortly thereafter.
The assassination was the basis for Peter Brook's 1967 film adaptation of Peter Weiss's 1963 play The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade. The title was shortened to Marat/Sade in promotional materials for the film.
