On this date in 2003, then-vice president Dick Cheney predicted on teevee that American troops, poised to invade Iraq later that week, would be "greeted as liberators". Despite an ill-advised declaration of victory after the invasion and the withdrawal of US combat troops in December 2011 after nearly a decade of war and occupation, the Iraqi insurgency continues to kill thousands per year.
"The Soviet occupation of Afghanistan gave us the Taliban. The American occupation of Saudi Arabia gave us bin Laden and Al Qaeda. The Israeli occupation of Lebanon gave us Hezbollah. Let us see what the American occupation of Iraq is going to give us."
