Thursday, December 20, 2012 – Homeless During the Holidays:
As you watch the hustle and bustle of the crowd of holiday shoppers walking by, did you happen to notice the homeless person amongst all the glittering lights? How many times this year, did someone ask you for spare change as you walked out of the restaurant or the grocery store? Did you ever wonder if that could be you? In some native communities it’s not uncommon for two or three families to share a two bedroom and one bathroom home, so would this type of living conditions be considered temporary homeless shelters? Being homeless is frustrating, especially for those who don’t have an extended family to take them in. What are native communities doing to help homeless families, especially around the holidays? Guests include: Brenda Combs (Ojibwe), Executive Director of Nimki Naabkawagan Batchewana First Nations Northeastern Ontario Family Crisis Center and Cher Ketah (Blackfeet/Tlingit), Case Manager for Labateyah Youth Home in Seattle, Washington and Jason Smith (Athabascan), Shelter Director for Ain Dah Yung Emergency Shelter in St. Paul, Minnesota..
