Part three of our series on addiction examines gambling addiction. Problem gambling, addiction, gambling dependence, compulsive gambling, are all terms used to describe a pathological dependence to the excitement created around winning. In May 2013, the newest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders will come out and it is expected to put gambling addiction into the new category “Behavioral Addictions.” What is the difference between gambling for entertainment and addiction? How does treatment for this addiction differ from treatment for drug and alcohol abuse? Many Native communities have a traditional history of games and competition.
