On this date in 1982, Spain reopened its border with Gibraltar to pedestrian traffic, a thaw in a dispute dating back to the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht. 

Fascist dictator Francisco Franco ordered the border sealed in 1969 after a ballot proposition for Spanish sovereignty was overwhelming rejected. Full border access was only granted in 2006, and tensions with the United Kingdom still surface from time to time.

Gibraltar's jubilee party sends signal to Madrid.
