Comedian Lily Tomlin was born on this date in 1939. Five year-old Edith Ann and telephone operator Ernestine were her most popular characters.

 

She was the first woman to perform solo in a Broadway show: Appearing Nitely (1977). Her 1985 one-woman show, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, became a 1991 feature film.
