The San Jose Sharks need to beat the Detroit Red Wings this next week. They are in the Western Conference Semifinals against the previous two years' Stanley Cup finalist. Yesterday they won 4-3 over the wings and I believe that they can win again on Sunday in San Jose if they exert the same offensive pressure that they had in game 1. It's a best of seven series and I believe that the Sharks can win it in 5 or 6 games if they play really well. If they slack off at all then they're likely going to lose the series and I'll be very frustrated.
Right now I'm listening to Frank Zappa, an artist who got me interested in less commercial sounding music with the many odd, experimental records he released in the 1960s and 70s. The record I'm listening to right now is "Burnt Weeny Sandwich," recorded in 1969. I first bought this record in high school and it got me interested in a lot of other music and helped lead me towards KDVS. Frank Zappa's The Mothers of Invention, Pavement, and Fugazi were probably my three favorite bands before becoming a KDVS DJ and thanks to KDVS I have learned a lot more about all kinds of music that I would have had a hard time accessing otherwise. I'll be graduating from UC Davis in a month's time and I don't know if I'll still be living in the Davis area next fall because it depends on where I find work and if I end up moving back home with my parents in the Bay Area, thanks to our terrible economy. But I do know that I am going to miss being a DJ and being known as DJ Dan both on the airwaves and among my other DJ friends at KDVS.
In my next blog entries I hope to write more cohesive ramblings that don't have so much to do with professional sports. Thanks again to all of you who donated to the KDVS fundraiser last week. Myself and the rest of the staff at KDVS greatly appreciate the support for community freeform radio that helps students like myself enjoy living in Davis. Check out my show Monday nights 8-10 PM too if you're interested.
