KDVS News: UC Davis Budget Hearing

There was a budget hearing in Chemistry 194 on March 8, 2011. Although the attendance of students was lower than expected, the students who did attend were involved and interested. Students were given paper to write questions on, and the panel spent most of the meeting answering these. The members of the panel agreed to have another meeting in spring quarter to continue updating students about the status of the budget. The members of the panel included: Bob Powell, Chair of Academic Senate; Kelly Ratliff, Associate Vice Chancellor; Linda Katehi, Chancellor; Ralph Hexter, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor; Fred Wood, Vice Chancellor; Joey Chen, Former ASUCD Controller; and Steven Ybarra, Former Civil Rights Attorney and current Professor.

The 2011 Fundraiser Is Fast Approaching... April 18th - 24th

The 2011 KDVS Fundraiser is fast approaching and we're gearing up for it down here in Lower Freeborn.

We've had a tough last year with the antenna failure and electrical rennovations so your support is more important than ever. Additionally, with an impending tower move, your support will be rewarded with an increase in signal strength and more services rendered back to you, the listener.

We're going to kick off fundraiser as usual on Picnic Day (April 16th) and officially start fundraiser week on the following Monday, April 18th at Midnight. Expect another week of self-humiliation, awesome premiums, caffeine overdoses, and exciting events as we blast through another fundraiser.

Please, keep us in mind this Spring, we cannot continue to serve the community without your support.

"Freeform"

Davis is known as quiet, small college town, but unbeknownst to many in the area, it is also home to a thriving radio station and music scene. Freeform takes a look at 90.3FM KDVS freeform radio, its hand in DIY music and art, and what listeners can do to support.

Thanks to Sarah Silva for putting this together.

Independent Media: An Increasingly Endangered Species

Two announcements today rocked the world of independent media and college radio.

First, the Department of Justice approved the pending NBC-Comcast merger. Not since before the the dawn of the information age have we seen such a consolidation of the generation and distribution of information under one entity.

Second, the University of San Fransisco sold their radio station's license without warning the staff of the station. The DJs showed up for their shows and there were new locks on the doors and the staff had to ask about what happened to their own station.

I'll leave analysis to others but I encourage you to read up on these events and think about their implications. How does consolidation of media affect the world, our information, and ultimately you? How does the slow extinction of independent media outlets affect our ability to receive unfiltered news of the day's events?
